Access vs Ownership

The way we buy clothes is very different to about 5 years ago, people buy 60% more than 15 years ago, and there is so many access points to buy clothes, for example social media is now a big buying outlet as well as online and offline buying. This generation crave newness and wont be seen out in the same outfit twice. Clothes rental is the new big idea for fast fashion, this can have its benefits and drawbacks, the benefits being it is more environmentally friendly as less waste is being produced, however defats the object buying clothes and keeping them having ownership over them. I think as the fashion industry is evolving the fast fashion sector is speeding up very quickly and so i think rental will work as a lot of people in this generation need new clothes and rentals gives them an access point and once it goes out fashion they can give it back , it reflects the fast moving pace of trends and how easily a garment can be the next big thing everyone wants and then next week its not in fashion anymore, so i think it does fit the fast pace fashion industry. I think it will work best by using luxury brands as they are more expensive and it gives access for people who wouldn’t be able to by it out right, for example a rental streetwear shop  just opened in London wear a lot of streetwear brands are being rented, this is good as streetwear is a very fast paced sector where things can go out of fashion very quickly, it is also good as a lot of street wear brands only have limited stock. Overall i think that clothes rental is the future as it fits with the fast pac of the fashion industry and our generation.

Gen Y Millennials

Simon Sineks talk on Millennials

Simon Sinek talks about Millennials and how human culture is evolved he talk about the pressure that millennials face on a day to day basis, for example pressures of social media, technology and the environmental pressures. he speaks about how this generation has be dealt a bad hand and corporations are partly to blame as millennial are not equipped with tools to have real fulfilment with a job and in life as social media puts so much stress and pressure on young people to be something else and that they are not good enough the way they are. I can identify with this, especially with social media and pressures to look pretty and skinny and have a lot of money, which has made me struggle with self confidence and love. FOR the most part i agree with Sinek that there is s o much pressure put on this generation and they have been dealt a bad card through not fault of their own. the bit i less agree with is that we constantly need gratification and that its due to bad parenting, i think we need help on improving more than gratification and i think this linked to the pressure of technology and social media, we have this constant need to be approved by others.

I feel like the future of this generation needs to change otherwise many people within this generation wont have a fulfilled life and have constant stress around them. we need to start balancing technology and putting devices down even for a bit and start to enjoy things outside of technology and i feel like a lot of pressure will be taken off  this generation. I think defining generations it is important for fashion as it helps target a specific audience, however i think stereotypes can come of defining each generation that can cause problems especially in the media and day to day life.

My Tribe

My likes and dislikes

Everyone has there own tribe even if you dont know it yet, it is a following of what you love and want to wear in fashion as a consumer, and how you shop compared to others. This blog post is going to be about my likes and dislikes in fashion and the industry itself. i think my likes and dislikes change through the seasons and i evolve my wardrobe. Ive allowed myself time to find my style and im still doing it now. the pressures of always looking on trend and fashionable is overwhelming, yet i still get a thrill when i walk into a store and see next seasons clothes on the front racks.i. Im still trying to find my feet with fashion but my likes and dislikes are a good start.

My likes have definitely evolved in the past year especially starting uni, Ive experimented more with clothes and researched a lot more. Here are my top 5 fashion likes at the moment:

  •    Streetwear
  •    the Blazer
  •    silk
  •    trainers
  •    Vivienne Westwood

Streetwear has become so popular over the past 2 years, and has swept throughout the whole fashion industry with many big name brands joining in. i like streetwear style as it captures the 90’s era of street style, including trainers hoodies, tracksuits and many more staples, but i do love how streetwear and high couture fashion is being mashed together to create masterpieces. The blazer is another one of my likes, i think its timeless and will make any outfit look 10 times smarter and i love the very harsh lines and straight cut of the garment giving a sense of empowerment. Trainers are big like of mine, Ive started collecting vintage trainers as well as copping new ones as well. Vivienne Westwood has been a long like of mine. i think she is such an influential designer and loves to delve into the political side of fashion , her garments exude empowerment and a voice for women.

My dislikes

  • Mixing patterns
  • full tracksuit
  • anything brown
  • ugg boots
  • crocs

mixing patterns is always been a no from me i like bold block colours more than pattern. full tracksuits for me is also a long standing dislike, i dont mind track pants not the full suit. brown dresses and trousers are a recent dislike of mine i feel i cant work with that colour in a whole outfit. Ugg boots and crocs are not practical and not my go to shoe.

Margaret Zhang

Review of a blogger

Margaret Zhang is a blogger/ film director based in New York, though she was born and raised in Sydney Australia. Margaret Zhang doesn’t consider herself as a fashion blogger but i digital influencer, she was included in the business of fashion top 500 influecners shaping todays fashion.

Zhang focuses on travel, fashion and filming. through her instagram you can see when she travels she loves to explore the cultures of each country and they’re fashion. from pictures you see that she loves injected colour into her wardrobe and mixing different patterns and textures. she also focuses on abstract still images as well as motions, these reflect her travels around the world. What inspires me about Zhang is her unique take on what she explores and how she captures her memories and travels through film and instagram. i love how she mixes different styles like coutre and streetwear to create her own vibe. I like how she portrays her clothes with grace and elegance and through interesting instagram uploads, using cool backdrops that reflect the clothes really well. her writing style is very abrupt and she uses powerful words to describe her travels. for example on her blogs homepage she describes watching dolphins well laying on the beach, “Dolphin watching at sunset in pastel shades that will bowl you over then slap you in the face”, i like how she uses descriptive writing to build up a picture in your mind. Zhangs blog inspires me to make my blog more descriptive a build up a story and picture in peoples minds and to inject colour and passion into every post i make.

i Think her fashion style is inspiring as she keeps up with trends yet puts her own twist on it. form her instagram and blog posts she has definitely given vital tips to being successful in the fashion industry as an influencer and an artist.
